5 Characteristics of a Great Logo Design
What are 5 characteristics of a great logo design? As you know, a logo is a visual representation of your business, and it’s the first visual of your business that your potential clients will see. A great logo builds customer loyalty, establishes your brand identity, and it provides a professional look for your business.
There are 5 characteristics of a great logo design you should follow as a designer, and you should look for as a business owner and they are;
- Simple
- Memorable
- Relevant
- Adaptable
- Timeless
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Some of the most iconic company logos are the ones that are simple. Keeping your mark simple makes your logo easy to recognize and helps potential customer remember your logo. Simplicity also allows your design to be memorable and versatile. Look at some of the bigger brands like McDonalds, FedEx, Coca Cola. Their logos are simple, and memorable and they are easy for you to recognize. You can probably draw out all of these without a second thought.
Here are some examples of some simple yet creative logo designs
BE MEMORABLE
According to Ad Weekly memorable logos are 13 percent more likely to get consumers’ attention, 7 percent more likely to make them want to learn more about your brand. An effective logo should be remembered with one quick glance and should be remembered the instance it’s seen by potential clients.
RELEVANT
All logo designs should be relevant to the type of business you’re in, or designing for. If you’re designing a logo for a day care, your design should reflect the child care industry, this type of design would not be appropriate for the medical industry. In order to achieve this be sure to do your due diligence and research the industry, your time spent doing this will be well worth it.
One thing to remember is the logo design doesn’t have to literally reveal what the business does. For example, for a child care logo, you don’t have to have kids playing, and for a medical business, you don’t have to incorporate a stethoscope.
ADAPTABLE
An effective logo should be functional and adaptable. It should be able to work across all types of medias like print and web. When designing a logo or received a logo file from your designer, your logo should be in a vector format. This guarantees that your logo is scalable to be any size. Your logo design should be able to be scaled big enough to go on a billboard, and small enough for an address label.
To ensure your logo is adaptable, you want to be sure to be mindful of printing cost. Try not to use so man colors. The more colors used the more expensive it is to print. So keep remember to keep the colors to a minimum if possible.
“I typically stick to no more than 3 colors when designing a logo, and I start by designing in black and white first. This allows me to focus on the concept first and not color.”

TIMELESS
Finally, a logo should be timeless. Your logo design should be able to sustain year after year. If you are designing a logo based on trends then you’re not creating a logo that will be timeless because once the trend ends, the logo will be outdated. Longevity is key when it comes to designing a logo, and that’s what you want to strive for.
